Risor ruber is a sponge-dwelling cryptobenthic fish species that has been found to present different life stages found within the same sponge. This characteristic makes them a very interesting model to study relatedness, dispersal and social organization – which has not been performed to date. In addition, this project aims to understand the influence of microbiome in Risor ruber speciation by analyzing the both skin and gut microbiome comparatively with host sponge microbiome.

In order to understand the impact of sample interference due to non-target material suspended in the water column, this research aims to investigate the superior performance of eRNA over eDNA as a biodiversity monitoring technique for living fish communities. This will involve an examination of the physical state of genetic materials (i.e., PSD) within the aquatic system and their capacity to detect fish species across various seasons in estuarine ecosystems.

Fishes represent one of the most diverse groups of vertebrates, with a staggering array of forms, behaviors, and ecological roles. Understanding the underlying evolutionary processes that have led to this incredible diversity is a fascinating and essential pursuit in the field of evolutionary biology.

Throughout my career, I have been contributing to the conservation of shark species by providing crucial genetic information for effective management and sustainable conservation practices. By accurately identifying different shark species and understanding their genetic diversity, we can gain valuable insights into their ecological roles and responses to environmental change.
